Fall Into Halloween Sales

As I walked out of my apartment this morning, I noticed the change in the air in New York City—one that required a light jacket. It was a cool reminder that summer is quickly fading and we’re nearing the start of the busiest quarter of the year. Halloween will (unofficially) kick off the holiday selling season, and most retailers are already setting up their Halloween-themed products and decorations.


Pet specialty retailers, in particular, have the opportunity to ring in sales this fall, as more pet owners are including their four-legged friends in their Halloween celebrations. Last year, a National Retail Federation survey estimated that pet owners would spend $370 million on pet costumes—40 percent more than they spent in 2010. With estimates like that, there is no doubt that pet specialty stores are positioned to make some more green as the spooky holiday approaches.


In addition to costumes, special treats, toys and safety leashes are other categories pet retailers should include in their Halloween setups. Here’s a look at what’s new this year:
