Andrew Kim, co-owner of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Healthy Spot—the 2013 Global Pet Expo Multi-Service Excellence Award winner—says Healthy Spot is not just about retail or services, its about creating a lifestyle brand for the modern pet parent.

Congratulations on the Multi-Service Excellence Award at Global Pet Expo! What does the win mean to you and your staff?
We are very excited and humbled to receive this acknowledgement. It is a validation for all the amazing hard work our staff puts in daily to be the best they can be at their craft and give an unparalleled customer service experience.

What services do you currently offer?
We currently offer award-winning grooming services, small dog daycare, obedience training, pet portraits and photography, and massage therapy treatments.

What are the most popular services with your customers? Why?
Our most popular services are our daycare and grooming. Our groomers really try to master their craft and provide the best bathing and grooming in the industry. We send our top groomers to compete on an international basis and our customers love knowing their pets are being cared for by groomers who are at the top of their field.

Our small dog daycare is glass enclosed, so there is literally nothing to hide. This gives our customers a sense of comfort and confidence that their dogs will be treated with the highest level of care in our safe and playful environment. We've gotten so popular that we have a waitlist to get into our facilities!

How do you define a winning retail strategy that includes services?
The same customers that expect and want the highest level of services appreciate the retail experience as well. We believe our retail business is in the service business—the customer service business. We provide our service clients with a wide array of healthy, holistic and premium alternatives to the traditional pet supplies and we offer our retail clients our award-winning services. Healthy Spot is not just retail or service; it is a lifestyle brand for the modern pet parent.

Healthy Spot strives to serve both retail and service customers equally.

How involved are you with your community?
Building a sense of community with our clientele is one of the many aspects we take pride in at Healthy Spot. Monthly “Yappy Hours,” book signings, adoption events, fundraisers, “Howl-O-Ween” events and “Howliday Pawty” are just examples of all the fun we provide for our clients while making a positive change in animal welfare.

Taking our community involvement the extra mile, we close our daycare every Sunday and open the space to local animal groups. They use the space free of charge and utilize the opportunity to bring awareness to the community regarding pet adoption.

What is your favorite part about being in the pet industry?
The clients—canine and human alike! We are in the business of doing well for our clients.  Helping and seeing them happy with our services and products really is intrinsically rewarding. It validates why we started in the first place.
