Animal Planet’s World Dominion

During a preliminary TV ratings report, Super Bowl 2013 seemed on track to beat previous records—but it wasn’t meant to be. It fell short, according to media reports, perhaps stymied in part by a literal dark cloud that fell upon the Superdome in New Orleans. But while a blackout left football fans in the dark, millions of dog lovers flocked to Animal Planet for the Puppy Bowl, and ratings during the 34-minute power outage shot up, according to Forbes.

 

That is not to say that the Puppy Bowl was lacking viewers before the blackout. It has grown in popularity over its nine-year run. Forbes reports that the show’s first viewing—the 3-5 p.m. EST time slot, drew more than 2.6 million viewers, outdoing last year’s premier numbers by 64 percent. 

 

Hitting a little closer to home, the cable TV network will also be making its mark this year at Global Pet Expo, being held in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 20-22.  Animal Planet will introduce a line of grooming products at the show, including shampoos and a detangler. The company has also updated its dry grooming products. And fans of  Victoria Stilwell—hostess of the channel’s show, It’s Me or the Dog—can hear her speak at the American Pet Product Association’s Professional Women’s Network breakfast on Friday, Feb. 22.
